So waking up at 7ish on a Sunday, I brought myself through a walk to Central. To be one of the participants of the Central Rat Race Relay. Yes, as silly as it sounds, eight employees were representing SCMP for this charity event organised by Hong Kong Land.
And it was no small event. I didnt manage to capture many pictures cos I was participating but these are what I managed to get.
With limited budget, we came up with our 'costume' like that. I suggested the camera - which was in the end, very creatively made by the Graphics and Design department using cardboard and a ribbon!
In our uniform of a white shirt and dark-coloured pants, we had: suspenders, the box cameras, a fedora hat and many 'PRESS' stickers placed on us so that in case our costume looked incoherent, at least there's a dead giveaway that we're suppose to be reporters. Our baton. provided by the organiser, is a plastic briefcase.
I was placed in the second leg: the Job Maze, which is basically just going through a maze made of big yellow cardboard. Which route you went depended on the colour card picked by my previous rat member. I had to go through a 'hole' in the cheeze to get through.
Other legs included: Shoe-shining to scratch off the number of coloured 'cheese' sponges another member had to find and getting into the 'cheese cart' to get to the finish line with the last rat member. Like this:
Haha yah we looked pretty silly but ahya whatever la, one day only - plus it's really just a PR event to show that SCMP was there. Haha last year SCMP got last to get the 'Turtle Award'; this year we were neither first nor last, so we didnt bother to stay til prize-giving. We all just left after the team was done haha
This was the final group picture of all the other rat members, the other employees who helped out or came to give support and one rat member's three kids - who could get a little violet with the yellow air clapper things! See!
Anyway, with our very low budget, it was quite a thing to see other companies (there were about maybe 20-30 others in the race) and their interesting costumes, which most I am sure were custom-made. There was one company that had their employees dressed in a light-coloured pin-striped suit which also had light pink velvet panels on the pants and jacket. Or another that had holes alllllll over the 'suit'. I didnt manage to get all but here are just some.
Well, at least this is one company event that I managed to attend in SCMP - something I can write about in my monthly log, maybe? Haha anyway, after that it was making my way back since Ruiming was probably still asleep and would get hungry in awhile. I wanted to go drop off my running shoes and change out too. It was already about 11.30am.
On my usual way back, I actually this old man painting at the side of the road and it was pretty realistic :)
He was trying to draw this scene:
Here was his unfinished work as I stood there. Not too bad right? I'm sure it'll look nice after it's done up with colours and more sketches!
Ruiming hadn't even brushed teeth yet when I got to his room, but he was already using his computer. We made a decision to have Subway for lunch, which was done by sitting at the side of steps near Subway. Haha because Subway was a small outlet along the Mid-levels escalator, everyone does that! Too bad I didnt get a picture. But it was quite nice to watch people go by while chomping down my Subway Club sandwich that had really nice fresh veggies and Sweet Onion sauce.
We took the tram ride towards Causeway Bay to walk downwards from there to go towards Wan Chai (yes, Ruiming again had to go there to do some walking around of that place for his article). We found quite a few petshops in Causeway Bay and I had fun teasing the puppies or cats with my tapping fingers or my silver Indian bangles that I wore.
The part of the unexplored area of Wan Chai was really more like a Geylang-Thomson (probably might have gotten it wrong) area I think - with lotsa shops selling toiletbowls, accessories, timber, blinds, sofas, furniture, etc. It totally reminded me of all the silly weekends that the family put in to settle things for the house during renovation!
Oh we also notice quite hilarious moments like these that can be seen in some places in HK:
It's practically open defiance by the locals! Look at the sign and the trash below it! It wasnt the first time we saw this happening. Haha I dont exactly know what Ruiming was trying to be, but it got me laughing so hard cos passer-bys were giggling too!
We also found Wan Chai Computer Centre, which was really like a much smaller version of Sim Lim Square - not even half of Sim Lim. But with many many stores anyway. I didnt have a thing to be interested there and our feet were getting tired before we met Jeremy, who had finished work for the day.
Yup, we were going to have dinner with him and Uncle Yee Sang - who was the one who suggested dinner. We have been trying not to get into that kind of situation cos Uncle Yee Sang has already paid for at least 2-3 meals for us.
This one he didnt give Jeremy a chance to say much, he just TOLD him to inform us that we were having dinner. So dinner it was, at the Macau Ferry Terminal place which had Macanese and Portuguese cuisine and was supposedly famous for their roasted pigeons (which was really quite tasty), their pork chop burgers, curries and iced coffee.
Peter insisted that the bird was looking at him.
Ruiming on the other hand was trying to feed the bird curry and iced coffee.
Dinner was funny cos Ruiming was just entertaining everyone with his hilarious ridiculous tactics he's suggesting we take so that we can avoid Chen Bo's 11pm curfew. Suggestions included using a table, thousands of plastic balls, inflate many balloons, hiding as potted plants or even dressing up as the purple Grimace (Ronald McDonald's friends) - or getting everyone (including the China students) to wear that.
Oh and by the time I got back, I used the washing machine after watching another girl do hers - she gave me tips cos she has been using it as a past student. She's called Wan Jing I think, and a year older than me. Ah-ha, now just to spread out the washing depending on how many hangers I have or how few working clothes I have left :)
Ok I have done enough multitasking of uploading pictures and doing my article. I really should go have my lunch break soon (it's 4.50pm) since I'm done with that article gone through. Or maybe not since I do have two more articles in line cos the first one on unemployment rate took longer to edit than expected.
Oh and maybe it really is my feet with flat shoes - I've got a small blister, which is much better than the previous attempt to wear low heels. Now you understand why I have to get boots? ;)
